When people think about lead or Lead-Acid batteries, they usually think about a car battery.
Lead Acid Batteries(LABs)
or Lead Batteries
are secondary batteries(meaning they are rechargeable) in which lead
and lead oxide
reacts with the sulphuric acid eletrolyte
to produce a voltage.
Types of Lead Batteries
Starting batteries are used to start engines on cars, boats and many other vehicles. Starting batteries provide a short burst of strong power in order to start the engine.
Small Consumer Sealed
Small consumer sealed lead batteries are six-volt batteries that provide extended cycling service. Consumer sealed batteries power many consumer products, such as drills, flashlights, children’s toys and electric starters for gas lawn mowers.
Deep cycle batteries power various electrical accessories, such as lights, trolling motors or winches, and motorized wheelchairs. Deep cycle batteries provide a low, steady level of power for a longer duration than a starting battery.
Dual purpose batteries are designed to serve a balanced combination of starting and deep cycle service. Dual purpose batteries have a high starting power for engine cranking but are able to withstand the cycle service demands from multiple accessory loads.
Industrial batteries, such as cell tower back-up power, provide a low, steady power for a longer duration than a typical deep cycle battery. The plates are thicker, and there is a higher amount of total energy available for a longer period of time. Industrial batteries have the ability to last for years and can be used in stationary applications that provide critical back-up power to systems that need constant power supply.
Uses of Lead-Acid Batteries
The common use of LABs is to start an engine where the battery deluvers a short burst of high power to start the engine.
- LABs are also used as a backup power source. When LABs supplies its powet as backup it may discharge completely orr only very slightly. It is recharged when the power comes back where-on after it stays idle for long periods of time.
- LABs can deliver the majority of its capacity repeated, possibly on a daily basis in what is alled ta deep cycle applciation. Examples of this type are electric and hybrid vehocels such as the golf carts and scooters, industrial appl including forklifts and marine apps like running trolling motors
Lead batteries are used for a vast number of purposes, but all batteries provide either starting or deep cycle power. The only difference is how much power is delivered and how long it needs to be delivered.
Are Lead Batteries Safe?
Lead battery manufacturing facilities operate in controlled environments with elaborate networks of ventilation and negative air pressure systems to capture any lead particles that might otherwise escape to the outside environment. These particles are captured in fine particle air filters where they are collected and properly recycled. These advanced air safety systems are made possible by the experience gained from many years of manufacturing lead batteries worldwide. In addition, voluntary agreements between lead battery manufacturers and OSHA
have systematically reduced worker exposure to lead hazards. The sulfuric acid used in lead battery electrolyte is the most widely used industrial chemical in the world. As with lead, many innovations have been developed to handle and even completely recycle sulfuric acid battery electrolyte in a safe and environmentally friendly method. Sulfuric acid is non-flammable and is not considered toxic beyond its obvious corrosive hazards.
Innovative recycling facilities have been developed to recycle virtually 100% of a lead battery’s components, and industry-supported regulation ensures that these products are returned to appropriate locations for reuse. This applies for the newer advancements in lead battery technology.
